Meet the Owner: Michael Cummings

Michael Cummings joined Camp Adventurewood as a camper back in the Summer of 2003, and has been a part of the camp ever since. He began his camp-career as a Junior Counselor in the Summer of 2013; and was promoted in 2017 to the position of Senior Counselor, when he was voted the Senior Counselor of the Year. In 2019, Michael became a Camp Manager, and was finally promoted to the position of Executive Director in August 2021. Michael assumed ownership of Camp Adventurewood after the conclusion of the 2023 Summer Session, becoming the sixth owner in the camp's 77-year history. In short, Michael has experienced every aspect of the program during his 21 years with the camp. He personally supervises the California DMV Commercial Driver License training for all the camp's Senior Counselors, thus ensuring that only the most-qualified drivers are behind the wheels of the camp vans. Michael also manages the behind-the-scenes aspects of the camp, ranging from employee background-checks and CPR certification to archery, canoeing, and slingshot safety protocols, to maintaining full compliance with the newly-adopted L.A. County Children's Camp Safety Ordinance. As the camps' owner, Michael is very hands-on, and has developed a proven track record for seeking out and hiring the most qualified and charismatic counselors in Southern California. Michael oversees the camp's daily operations. Whether pre-scheduling each troop's daily activities, managing "extended care," or selecting camper-friendly Clydesdales for the horse-drawn wagon rides, Michael makes sure all the camp's activities are safe and thoroughly entertaining.

Our Program

Camp Adventurewood limits the number of admitted campers in order to offer a greater variety of activities with more individual supervision. While at camp, children are placed into various groups according to their ages. Each group is composed of a dozen campers. Two counselors are assigned to each group of campers. Senior counselors are hired on the basis of ideals, college records, maturity, knowledge, driving records, and overall experience working with children. Junior counselors are hired on the basis of leadership, character, attentiveness, and dependability. Our counselors love their jobs and look forward to returning every summer! Camp Adventurewood is proud that our 6:1 camper-to-counselor-ratio is one of the very best in all Los Angeles county. (If you child has any friends or neighbors the same age also enrolled in camp, we will make sure that they are placed in the same group.)

Camp Location

Our base camp is at Arroyo Park, located on Stoney Drive in South Pasadena. The shaded areas and open fields of Arroyo Park provide the perfect atmosphere for most of our camp activities. From there, our campers journey throughout the scenic Arroyo Seco for horseback riding, canoeing, archery, and various treasure hunt excavations. What to Bring

Unless specified otherwise, campers should bring their own lunches. Our camp provides chilled water during lunchtime and throughout the day. Campers should wear their official Camp Adventurewood shirts, shorts, and tennis shoes. They should also bring a backpack containing a towel, and water bottle. Official Camp Adventurewood wristbands will be provided to each child by their counselors each morning.
